About us - From The Rabbi

Kehillat Ohr Tzion is Buffalo’s premier Modern Orthodox Synagogue. Led by Rabbi Elie Farkas, Kehillat Ohr Tzion’s mission is to provide the highest standard of Orthodox Judaism while providing the highest standard of warmth and welcoming to Jews of all backgrounds. We pride ourselves on being a diverse congregation with Jews of all levels of observance, yet who all feel comfortable in a strictly Orthodox setting.

In addition to Davening and classes, what makes our shul most unique is the camaraderie. After services, we all work together to transform the shul into an auditorium, and enjoy weekly kiddushes and the company of our friends. Perhaps even more unique are the regular “Fun Events”, geared at bringing the community together for fun outside of synagogue norms.  Examples of such events include the KOT Summer of Fun, KOT Fall Film Festival, BBQs, Shabbat Dinners and much more!

Kehillat Ohr Tzion is an Orthodox Shul, but it’s a place for everyone! Spend a Shabbos with us, and you may get hooked.

Rabbi Elie Farkas is the Morah D’Atrah of Kehillat Ohr Tzion in Buffalo New York and has served the congregation since July 2007. In addition to working for the Synagogue, Rabbi Farkas is also the Judaic Studies Coordinator at Kadimah School, as well as a teacher at The High School of Jewish Studies. Additionally, Rabbi Farkas serves on the Buffalo Board of Rabbis, the board for The Mikvah of Buffalo, the Eruv committee and the local Chevra Kaddisha.

Rabbi Farkas received his Smicha from Yeshiva University in New York City in 2007, where he also received his BA in Biology and his MS in Jewish Education. While studying at YU, Rabbi Farkas got his initial rabbinic experience at The Hampton Synagogue where he served as the Winter Rabbi.

Rabbi Farkas and his beloved wife Yael have two daughters, Miriam and Shira, who are both native Buffalonians.  They love the work they are doing and the community they serve, and hope to help KOT continue to grow in size stature and spirituality.
